SALEWA ALPINEXTREM PRO

Delivering the best: from mountain pro to mountain pro

What transpires when professional alpinists and mountain athletes spend two years working side by side on development with product designers and lab technicians? The answer is products which add up to something a whole lot more than just another new collection. For SALEWA, the mountain sports specialist from South Tyrol, the alpineXtrem pro range represents the realisation of a long-held desire: supporting professionals who spend over 300 days a year in the mountains by providing them with the perfect apparel.

“The pro product range is for us as a mountain sports supplier the equivalent to what a racing car model is to a Formula One team. We learn from the extreme demands made by the best mountain sport athletes, draw knowledge from this and use our findings in our technical development work for SALEWA. I’m talking about materials, styling and details such as hood technology or zips,” explains Group Brand and Marketing Director Reiner Gerstner. “But the pro line also embodies the respect we have for mountain guides and mountain rescue teams, who put themselves on the line every day, risking their own lives to save others. The pro philosophy is now translating through to all of our product categories.”

The SALEWA alpineXtrem pro range represents an exclusive premium range, the real core of the Bolzano mountain sport specialist’s brand. It is the result of years of research by leading alpinists and mountain guides in tandem with product designers as well as lab and material technicians: the pros on the ground, who are more than aware of their needs, working alongside the specialists who are willing and able to rapidly take the unconventional route and deliver products that meet these needs. “As part of a helicopter rescue team, we are often faced with extreme situations. These are the moments when we have to know that our equipment, with its precision and quality, will back us up all the way. This is one of the reasons why we contributed to the development of the pro Linie range – because it is specifically tailored to our requirements,” says South Tyrolean Hans Unterthiner, a member of the Pelikan II helicopter rescue team.

SALEWA knows, from its collaboration over so many years with mountain athletes and mountain rescuers, that top performance is only achievable with state-of-the-art, high-tech equipment.

“Our partnership with professional mountain rescue teams – ranging from the teams in the Polish Tatra mountains to the Guide Alpine organisation in Piedmont, through to the Beijing Mountain Rescue Team – shows that they place their trust in SALEWA,” sums up Reiner Gerstner.

The brains behind the pro range set themselves the goal of designing innovative, wear-resistant materials for day-to-day action on snow, ice and rock. One example is the use of Powertex to produce breathable clothing that is also waterproof and windproof. The flexible, high-performance and lightweight material eases the strain for athletes, mountain guides and mountain rescuers in whatever mission they are undertaking.

Being innovative not only means raiding the vault of 75 years’ valuable experience to dream up great new creations: thinking outside the box and drawing inspiration from other sources are also required. A revolutionary material that SALEWA has only recently started deploying can be traced back to gloves worn by oil rig workers. The so-called Superfabric is particularly water- and cold-repellent, non-flammable, abrasion-resistant and cannot be cut. Which explains the Superfabric’s inclusion in selected products in the alpineXtrem pro range.

The mountain sports specialist from South Tyrol is particularly proud of the introduction of the Pro Gaiter and Pro Guide boots.

These are the first ever alpine boots featuring an adjustable sole. Thanks to the patented flex mechanism, sole rigidity can be adjusted using the device built into the heel: 100% rigid for climbing, or semi-flexible for the long walk to the face.

The watertight gaiter and maximum thermal insulation make this boot the perfect companion for taking on highaltitude terrain, technical mixed routes and ice.
For the SALEWA product development team it is both a huge challenge and a great honour to take the requirements and requests of professionals and deliver products that do the job in the form of the alpineXtrem pro range.
