Glen Plake has long been a stalwart of the freeride scene and is a living legend in the world of skiing. More than anything else, however, he is someone who strives to share this enthusiasm for his sport with others. This makes him a valuable member of the international SALEWA alpineXtrem Free Ski Mountaineering Team. It is no wonder that our working relationship is so good, or that our results are so outstanding. This is the second time that mountain sports specialists SALEWA are presenting a selection of products which bear a very special seal of approval: “Glen Plake’s Choice” – tailor-made and developed in accordance with the specifications of this Californian ski professional.

Bolzano (IT), December 2011 – Ever since his dad first put him on a pair of skis at the age of two, skis have literally meant the world to Glen Plake. He spends 300 days a year on his skis, always looking for the next rock face behind which lies a descent through untouched or even never before skied flanks, couloirs and steep faces.

Be it in his adopted home of Chamonix or back in the USA where he is originally from, this ski fanatic with his trademark Mohawk always draws a great deal of interest. The former mogul champion has been skiing professionally since the mid-1980s, and has established an impressive record in free skiing and big mountain skiing all over the world. The US skiing magazine “POWDER Magazine” voted him the “most influential skier of the past 35 years”, and in October 2010 he was officially inducted into the US Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame. As the star of such influential skiing films as “The Blizzard of Aahhhs”, “Fistful of Moguls”, “License to Thrill” and “The Edge of Never”, Glen Plake has amazed countless skiing fans, becoming an idol to many. If you ask this California native who he looks up to, he will name Hannes Schneider, a skiing pioneer from Arlberg who emigrated to the USA. They both share a lifetime dream of unbounded freedom on skis.

While on this mission, Glen is a skiing vagabond in search of the comprehensive alpine experience. Whereas he used to get about using snowmobiles and helicopters, today he feels driven by his love of mountain climbing to continuously seek out extreme slopes. It all goes back to the “climb to ski” philosophy: ascending through difficult alpine terrain such as rock faces and ice, then descending in a wild ride through untouched, sometimes even virgin, terrain. The intensity with which Glen pursues his sport puts tremendous demands on his equipment. Being used under the toughest conditions, it can brook no compromises in quality, functionality or durability. Glen has been working closely with SALEWA for two years now on the development of products that unite his many years of experience and passion for his sport with his ideas and desires.

the products from the Signature Line in Winter 2012/13

“Glen Plake’s Choice” is the name given by Glen Plake and SALEWA to the Signature Line bearing this skiing legend’s seal of approval. Three jackets, one pair of pants, a tshirt and a backpack from the SALEWA alpineXtrem collection have made the grade in 2012 – and are easily identified by the tag bearing a personal greeting from the freeski pioneer. These products for the next winter season are available from selected retailers.

VEDA 3-layer Powertex jacket
Glen Plake is an outstanding athlete who has given new meaning to the “extreme movement” in skiing. This three-time Hot Dog Champion is as dominant in descents of up to 60° on steep compacted snow flanks in the Indian Himalayas as he is as the star of countless good skiing films. In a sport where most stars disappear quickly, Glen has been in the spotlight for a quarter of a century now.
When it comes to its look and performance, his clothing must also have star quality. Glen’s jacket of choice continues to be the VEDA, an elastic and highly functional weatherproof jacket made of three-layer Powertex. Two long, 2-way ventilation zippers beneath the arm and two on the upper arm ensure excellent ventilation even on long and strenuous ascents. Other practical details: a storm hood that can be adjusted with one hand, two large inside mesh pockets for ski goggles and other items and Velcro fasteners on the sleeves that can be utilised even while wearing gloves.

VASAKI 3-layer Powertex pants
As a member of the SALEWA alpineXtrem Team, Glen lives free ski mountaineering with particular intensity. He is certain that one has to be a good climber in order to reach the most spectacular descents. Whether ascending or descending, VASAKI pants are his faithful companion. These functional pants fashioned from three-layer Powertex offer the ultimate in flexibility, breathability and wind and weather protection. The fashionable Sahara colour goes perfectly with VEDA and its stylish Pagoda colour. The special features that were optimised as a result of Glen’s practical experience are particularly impressive. One such feature is the gusset in the crotch, which improves both comfort and freedom of movement. The waterproof 2-way zippers extending to the hips on either side ensure optimum ventilation and make these pants easy to take off or put on – even while wearing boots. Ski ya!

No one would question Glen’s toughness, yet on particularly cold days even this freeski idol likes to have a lightweight warm jacket for underneath. That is when the Maoli gets its turn to shine. Once it is no longer needed, this high-quality down jacket can be folded up compactly and easily stored in one’s backpack.

Thanks to body mapping, this warm, ergonomic sheepskin jacket made from Polarlite can keep pace with Glen, as it fits perfectly to the body. Dynastretch inserts on the sides, beneath the armpits and on the cuffs ensure that it is as elastic as this Californian ski mountaineer requires.

Standing out is one of Glen’s trademarks, and that is equally true for the shirt bearing his likeness. A striking image
on pleasant, high-quality cotton as an homage to the most colourful mohawk on the freeski scene.

Glen Plake is a godfather to his sport, and this freeski pioneer has also taken a keen interest in our alpine backpack. In addition to their connection to Chamonix, both Glen and this backpack have versatility in common. Glen worked closely with SALEWA product developers to design this backpack in strict accordance with his desires. The result is a multifunctional companion that can render professional service for mountain sports enthusiasts when skiing or mountaineering. Numerous clever details such as the main compartment with back accessibility help ensure this is the case. The backpack is ideally linked to the body thanks to Contact Fit Pro technology. This top-loading backpack was inspired by classic alpine backpacks, and ensures that its wearers are optimally equipped for alpine adventures, especially if they will be spending two or three days away from the nearest mountain hut.
